Adult screening estimate

BMI calculator

Estimate adult body mass index from height and weight using metric or US measurements.

Estimate BMI

For adults age 20 and older. This is a screening measure, not a diagnosis.

BMI formulas

Metric: weight in kilograms ÷ height in meters²
US: 703 × weight in pounds ÷ height in inches²

How to interpret BMI carefully

For adults, 18.5 through 24.9 is commonly used as the standard range. BMI is only a screening measure: it does not directly measure body fat and can misclassify people based on muscle mass, age, sex, ethnicity, and other individual factors.

Important limitations

  • This adult calculator is not appropriate for children or teens.
  • It cannot diagnose any condition or determine an individual healthy weight.
  • Pregnancy, athletic build, and other circumstances can make BMI less informative.
